Major League Baseball on ESPN

Major League Baseball (MLB) prepares to crown a new champion with LIVE coverage on ESPN of the season's biggest event, the World Series.

October promises to be electric, with MLB expanding the playoffs as of this season to include 10 teams, adding a second wild card in each league. In the preseason rankings, the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels were picked to lead the American League (AL) - and at least the first two have - but the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays have remained very much in the hunt.

It's the National League (NL), however, that has delivered the biggest upsets, as the leaders by early August were the surprisingly consistent Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates, while the mighty Philadelphia Phillies played catch up in their division. Other serious challengers for NL playoff spots include the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers, and just possibly the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals.

ESPN's season coverage of MLB wraps in October with LIVE coverage of the season's crowning event, the best-of-seven World Series.
