Erstad singles in winning run in 12th inning

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The Anaheim Angels faced eight Detroit pitchers -- including one who arrived during the game -- and got key hits against three of them to pull out their fourth straight victory.

Troy Glaus singled home the winning run in the 12th inning as the Angels beat the Tigers 7-6 Tuesday night to increase their lead in the AL wild card race to two games over Boston.

"It's all about winning ballgames,'' Glaus said. "It doesn't matter who does it or when they do it. It's all about winning. That's what we're here to do. We figure someone's going to get a big hit. Someone's going to do something that's going to give us a chance to win. That's just the attitude we've always had.''

Shawn Wooten doubled with one out and Glaus followed with his
hit off Adam Bernero (2-6).

"Troy's starting to swing the bat much better,'' manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's going to be a key piece to our puzzle as we get into the stretch run. It's good to see him start to contribute the way we know he can.''

Tigers manager Luis Pujols said before the game he didn't want to use Bernero because he threw 50 pitches on Monday night. But that plan was scrapped.

"I wasn't planning on an extra-inning game, and I had to make all the moves that I could,'' Pujols said. "It was a challenging game.''

Al Levine (4-2) retired the side in order in the 12th to earn the victory.

The Tigers, who tied it at 5 on Damian Jackson's sacrifice fly
in the fifth against Aaron Sele, took the lead in the 11th an RBI
double by Carlos Pena. Shane Halter slid past the plate, then
scrambled back to avoid catcher Jose Molina's tag.

"Pena had a great at-bat,'' Pujols said. "He fouled off a few pitches on a 3-2 count and he still got the double and the RBI. We did a lot of good things tonight. It's too bad they tied it up after we scored that run.''

The Angels pulled even when Glaus doubled and scored on a pinch
single by Darin Erstad, who didn't start because of fatigue in his
right leg. Anaheim went on to load the bases with one out, but
David Eckstein hit a shallow fly ball that kept Erstad at third and
Orlando Palmeiro grounded out.

Fernando Rodney, who got pinch-hitter Shawn Wooten to ground
into a force play to end the 10th, stood to earn the victory before
the Angels tied it.

Rodney was recalled from Triple-A Toledo for the third time this
season when reliever Julio Santana was placed on the disabled list,
and arrived after about an hour after the game began.

"His plane arrived at 9:30. Before he left, I told him to come straight to the ballpark,'' Pujols said. "When he got here, I told him to get dressed and go to the bullpen.''

The Angels scored three times in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead
against Jose Lima. Scott Spiezio had an RBI single, Bengie Molina
had a sacrifice fly and Adam Kennedy hit a go-ahead double.

"I almost forgot about him, it was so long ago,'' Pujols said of Lima. "I thought he threw the ball better the last time he pitched. Molina hit a home run on a slider. I don't think it was a good pitch selection, but Lima's been in the major leagues a long time, and he knows how he wants to pitch a game.''

Hiram Bocachica gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the third with his
third homer in eight games since being acquired from Los Angeles.
Jackson followed with a single and scored on Bobby Higginson's double.

Lima walked Brad Fullmer to open the second and Bengie Molina
hit his second homer of the season to left field with two outs,
tying the score at 2.

The Tigers scored twice in the first, ending a streak of 22 consecutive scoreless innings by Angels pitchers.
