Montreal native Gagne has warm welcome, rude exit

MONTREAL (AP) -- Eric Gagne didn't want to make his hometown fans
happy.

He gave up a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and
the Montreal Expos beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Gagne (1-1) entered the game to a standing ovation with two outs
in the eighth and Vladimir Guerrero on first base.

O'Leary hit Gagne's first pitch of the game over the wall in
right field to put the Expos ahead 4-3. Gagne walked Fernando Tatis
on four pitches before inducing Andres Galarraga to line out to
deep right field to end the inning.

"You understand it's a hometown boy and he's had a tremendous
season, so it didn't bother me that they were cheering for him,''
Expos manager Frank Robinson said. "It goes to show you how fickle
fans are. One pitch, and they're back on our side.''

It was Gagne's first loss of the year, and only his third blown
save in 42 chances.

"Anyone who can read a scouting report knows I'm throwing a
first-pitch fastball, the problem was the location,'' Gagne said.
"If you locate the fastball, it's no big deal.''

O'Leary was looking for the fastball.

"I know he throws real hard,'' O'Leary said. "I just wanted to
try and make good contact and get the head (of the bat) out so
maybe something like that could happen.''

Vladimir Guerrero extended his hitting streak to 13 games with
an infield single in the sixth, but he failed in his bid to homer
in four straight games.

Michael Barrett went 3-for-3 for the Expos as they evened their
record at 59-59, 6{ games behind the Dodgers in the wild card race.

Tomo Ohka allowed three runs -- just one earned -- on six hits in
seven innings with five strikeouts.

He has allowed one earned run or less in 12 of his 25 starts
this year, and in five of his last eight.

Dan Smith (1-0) struck out three Dodgers to earn his first win
of the year.

Scott Stewart struck out Mike Kinkade to end the game with
pinch-runner Cesar Izturis on third for his 16th save in 18
chances.

Andy Ashby allowed two runs on eight hits in 7 2-3 innings.

"I feel bad because Ashby threw such a good ballgame,'' Gagne
said. "He went out there and did a great job. We need games like
this, we can't afford to lose games like this.''

Ashby's only walk was to lead off the game, and he struck out
five in his third straight start of at least seven innings.

Los Angeles took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on two unearned runs.
With one out, Alex Cora reached first on second baseman Jose
Vidro's error, went to second on Ashby's sacrifice and scored on
Dave Roberts' double to center. Roberts scored on Marquis Grissom's
single.

Game notes
Gagne's first and only trip to his hometown this season
was met with a tepid response from the Montreal public, as only
13,263 passed through the Olympic Stadium turnstiles. ... Michael
Barrett stole his fourth base of the year in the second. ... Green
was thrown out by Barrett trying to steal second in the sixth. ...
Guerrero's 32 homers this season marks the fifth consecutive year
he has topped the 30-homer mark. Before Guerrero, there were only
five 30-homer seasons in team history. Rusty Staub hit 30 in 1970,
Gary Carter had 31 in 1977, Larry Parrish hit 30 in 1979, Andre
Dawson had 32 in 1983, and Henry Rodriguez had 36 in 1996.
