PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Vicente Padilla enjoys pitching at Veterans
Stadium.

Padilla scattered four hits over seven shutout innings, lowering
his ERA at home to 1.91, as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the
Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 on Tuesday.

"I feel comfortable at home,'' he said.

Mike Lieberthal hit a two-run homer and doubled for the
Phillies.

Lieberthal, who hit three home runs Saturday, is 25-for-58
(.431) in his last 14 games with five doubles, six homers and 10
RBI. On Tuesday, he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Padilla (12-7) allowed four singles to pick up just his second
win since June 29, eight starts. He walked two and struck out five.
Padilla improved to 6-2 at home.

Padilla, who has struggled with a stiff shoulder early in games
since the All-Star break, looked strong from the start as he went
at hitters with an array of four-seam fastballs.

"The last few games, my velocity was down,'' Padilla said. "I
threw two-seamers and hitters were getting good swings. I threw
more four-seamers and had better velocity.''

Despite having thrown just 97 pitches, Padilla said he had had
enough in the heat and humidity. The Phillies pinch-hit for him in
the bottom of the seventh.

"Vicente was tired,'' Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "He's
pitched almost an entire year with no vacations. He pitched in
Mexico (over the winter). He battled for a spot in the rotation in
spring training. He's pitched a lot of innings.''

Lieberthal didn't seem to notice his pitcher getting tired.

"He was still nasty in the seventh,'' Lieberthal said.

Reliever Terry Adams surrendered a four-pitch leadoff walk to
Lenny Harris and a one-out RBI double to Eric Young in the eighth.
Adams ended the threat by striking out Jeffrey Hammonds and getting
Richie Sexson to fly out to the warning track in center.

Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for his 34th save in 42 chances.

The Phillies took the lead in the fourth off starter Glendon
Rusch (6-12). After Pat Burrell walked, Lieberthal connected for
his 13th homer deep into the left-field seats.

"Earlier in the season, I was really pulling off balls and my
mechanics were messed up,'' Lieberthal said. "Over the last two
months, I've been able to stay back on balls and hit to all fields.
A lot of my hits have been to right field. That's a good sign.''

Padilla escaped trouble in the first two innings with double
plays, including a strikeout-caught stealing in the first. With
runners on first and second, Padilla struck out Sexson and
Lieberthal threw out Young at third.

"He's a real good pitcher, you can't let him off the hook but
we did,'' Milwaukee manager Jerry Royster said.

Padilla retired 12 straight at one point. Young broke the string
in the sixth with a two-out single.

''(Padilla) didn't have great command but he was tough to
locate,'' Brewers third baseman Mark Loretta said.

Padilla encountered one more jam in the seventh. After a one-out
walk to Matt Stairs and a single by Jose Hernandez, Mark Loretta
fouled out to first baseman Travis Lee, who made a tough catch
along the stands. Padilla got Paul Bako to ground out to second
base to keep the shutout intact.

Rusch kept Milwaukee in the game with seven strong innings. He
allowed five hits, walked three and struck out three.

"Glendon did a good job,'' Royster said. "Liberthal's just a
hot hitter right now. It wasn't a bad pitch.''

Young went 3-for-4 and is hitting .833 (10-for-12) in his
last three games. ... Burrell has 67 walks, three short of his
career high set last season. ... Padilla's five strikeouts were his
most since he fanned seven against Montreal on July 4. ...
