Padres set record for most pitchers used in season

MONTREAL (AP) -- The San Diego Padres got a record-setting
performance from the latest additions to their pitching staff.

Pinch-hitter Gene Kingsale's two-run double capped San Diego's
four-run eighth inning as the Padres set a major league record for
pitchers used in a season in a 6-5 win over the Montreal Expos on
Saturday night.

Reliever Jonathan Johnson (1-0), whose contract was purchased
from Triple-A Portland earlier in the day, became the 33rd pitcher
to appear in a game for San Diego this season.

Johnson, who pitched a perfect seventh, took over from starter
Mike Bynum, who made his major league debut. San Diego broke
Cleveland's record of 32 pitchers in the 2000 season.

"It's probably not a good thing for the organization,'' Bynum
said. "With so much movement, it's hard to build a team around all
these guys coming in and out every day, but it's good for us young
guys that we get the opportunities.''

Expos right fielder Vladimir Guerrero didn't start for just the
second time this season because of a strained left shoulder.

Guerrero, who is day to day and expected to miss Sunday's game
as well, injured himself in Friday's 11-6 win while diving back to
first base after singling in the seventh.

Trailing 4-2, Phil Nevin hit a one-out homer off T.J. Tucker in
the eighth. One out later, Bubba Trammell walked and reliever Matt
Herges replaced Tucker.

Herges (2-5) got Deivi Cruz to fly to right fielder Wil Cordero,
who was starting in place of Guerrero. Cordero turned to his left
as he went back on the ball, and then turned back around to his
right before dropping the ball for a three-base error as Trammell
scored the tying run from first.

"We thought he had it all the way,'' Kingsale said. "If
(Guerrero) was out there, it would have been different but he
wasn't so we took advantage of that and that was the ballgame right
there. When those things happen, you've got to take advantage of
it, which we did.''

Cordero refused to talk to reporters following the game but
Expos manager Frank Robinson shared his perspective.

"Those are the plays you expect people to make, no matter who's
out there, and we didn't get it done,'' Robinson said. "It cost us
the ballgame.''

Tom Lampkin was intentionally walked and Kingsale hit a drive to
right-center which bounced over the outfield wall for a ground-rule
double to make it 6-4.

Trevor Hoffman allowed a solo homer to Jose Macias in the ninth
before earning his 32nd save.

Expos starter Britt Reames allowed two runs and six hits in five
innings, including Ron Gant's run-scoring single in the first and
Ryan Klesko's 22nd homer with two out in the third.

Trailing 2-1, Montreal's Brad Wilkerson hit a two-run homer in
the fourth and Cordero's RBI double in the fifth put the Expos up
4-2.

Game notes
A streaker jumped on to the field after Kingsale's double
in the eighth, briefly interrupting the game. The man -- who was
wearing a pair of briefs -- slid into second base at Kingsale's feet
before he was forcibly removed by security. ... Bynum allowed six
hits and four runs in six innings. ... Expos right-hander Tony
Armas Jr., who was eligible to be activated from the disabled list
on Saturday, threw 75 pitches while pitching a simulated game
earlier in the day.
