SEATTLE (AP) -- Jarrod Washburn is still looking for his first major league shutout. What he did find, though, is the form that carried him to 18 wins last season.

Washburn threw eight sharp innings, Brad Fullmer hit a two-run homer and Troy Percival got his first save of the season as the
Anaheim Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 3-0 Thursday night.

Washburn (1-1) held Seattle to five hits by maintaining a low
pitch count each inning and keeping the Mariners out of scoring
position almost all night.

"He wasn't hitting 95 on the gun, but his ball had plenty of hop,'' Seattle manager Bob Melvin said. "When you see balls getting fouled off over our dugout by right-handers getting jammed by pitches that look like 85, 86, he's got a little hop.''

Washburn bounced back from a loss at Oakland last Saturday and
looked more like the ace that helped the Angels win their first
World Series a year ago.

"I didn't feel that good at all, mechanically, not that great,
especially the first few innings,'' he said. "After that, I felt
real good. Something came together.''

The left-hander walked one and struck out one. Percival worked a
hitless ninth for Anaheim's first save of the season.

The only thing Washburn didn't get was his first shutout. Angels
manager Mike Scioscia said the plan was to give Percival a "clean
inning'' in which he wouldn't have to worry about thwarting a
rally.

"One of these days I'll be up 5-0,'' Washburn said. "I'm fine
with going eight and giving a save to Percy.''

Ryan Franklin (1-1) went six innings before giving way to Shigetoshi Hasegawa to start the seventh -- the first inning the Angels failed to put a runner on base.

Washburn dominated all the Mariners but one: Willie Bloomquist.
Called up late last season, Bloomquist got his first major league
hit off the lefty during a 4-for-4 performance last Sept. 22.

This time, Bloomquist drove a triple past Darin Erstad to the
center-field wall in the fifth and had a third-inning bloop single
down the right-field line. Bloomquist flied out in the eighth but
improved to 6-for-7 lifetime against Washburn.

"I got lucky on a couple of pitches,'' Bloomquist said. "He pitched me pretty tough. I got a fister down the right-field line. I was able to keep my hands inside long enough on the one to right center.''

Washburn was as surprised as Bloomquist.

"He hit some pretty good pitches and got some cheap hits off
them,'' Washburn said. "Maybe next time we'll throw it right down
the middle and see what he does with that.''

But Bloomquist was the exception to Washburn's outstanding
effort. John Olerud walked in the second and Bret Boone singled in
the sixth. In the eighth, Ichiro Suzuki and Randy Winn had two-out
singles, but Boone flied out to center.

"Boonie hits the ball as hard as you can hit it,'' Melvin said.
"If he gets a little air under it, it's a tie game. He just lined
it at the center fielder. It wasn't meant to be.''

Fullmer gave the Angels all the runs they'd need by driving an
0-1 pitch deep into the right-field bleachers in the third. Erstad
was on base after drawing a two-out walk.

"It's a good feeling when you're not in any real danger
there,'' Washburn said.

The Angels scored again with two outs in the fifth. Fullmer
singled to left, went to third on a single by Garret Anderson and
scored to make it 3-0 when Troy Glaus doubled to left.

Game notes
Angels INF Benjie Gil was scratched from the lineup with
lower back spasms. He's listed as day-to-day. ... Pregame
ceremonies included a salute to Armed Forces personnel and a
flyover by Prowler aircraft from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.
