BALTIMORE -- It had been seven weeks since Jeremy Guthrie won a game.

Not that he has been bad during that frustrating stretch. He just hasn't gotten any run support.

On Saturday, Guthrie pitched seven solid innings to win for the first time since Opening Day and the Baltimore Orioles backed him with eight runs and 14 hits in an 8-3 win over the Washington Nationals.

"I don't think I've pitched with a lead in over a month," Guthrie said. "To see the team fight back right away -- put some runs on the board -- put the responsibility back on my shoulders to try to keep the momentum on our side. We were able to do that and then break it open late."

Each of the Orioles had at least one hit. Nolan Reimold had a two-run homer to key a four-run third inning. Baltimore added four runs in the seventh.

Guthrie (2-6) allowed just two unearned runs and hadn't won in his past seven starts. He came in with the poorest run support of any American League starter. The Orioles, who ended a four-game losing streak, hadn't scored while he was on the mound in his previous three starts.

"It's been a crazy season," Guthrie said.

In fact, it's been a crazy week. Guthrie was originally supposed to start Thursday, but Baltimore burned through its entire bullpen in Wednesday's 15-inning loss to the Yankees. Guthrie made an emergency relief appearance in the 15th -- bumping his start back two days.

After his stellar opening night, a no-run, three-hit, eight-inning gem at Tampa Bay on April 1, Guthrie was hospitalized with pneumonia and his second start was postponed. He has pitched in hard luck since.

After the 15-inning defeat, the Orioles allowed 30 runs in the previous two games -- chewing up the bullpen and forcing the team to make several moves to bolster it.

Manager Buck Showalter was relieved to see Guthrie react well to the delay in his start.

"Any time you take a starting pitcher and change up his routine like we had to with him," Showalter said, "that was somewhat a concern going into it, but he handled it well."

Reimold, recalled Friday from Triple-A Norfolk, hit a two-run home run. Vladimir Guerrero had his seventh straight multihit game, the longest such streak of his career. Matt Wieters had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games on his 25th birthday, and J.J. Hardy broke an 0-for-23 slump with a base hit.

"One through nine put pressure on them," Guthrie said.

He allowed two unearned runs in the third inning when first baseman Brandon Snyder booted a ball that Laynce Nix hit. Guthrie allowed five hits, striking out four and walking one.

The Orioles scored four runs off John Lannan (2-5) in the third. Lannan, who hasn't won in his last six starts, gave up six runs in six-plus innings, allowing a season-high nine hits. Lannan struck out six and walked one.

"It's disappointing that I lose it a little bit, but just got to keep on battling," Lannan said.

Washington took a brief 2-0 lead in the third when Jerry Hairston singled with one out. With two outs, Ian Desmond hit a ground-rule double. Nix grounded to first, but the ball went off Snyder's glove, and both runners scored.

Baltimore took a 4-2 lead off Lannan in the third. Reimold hit a two-run homer to left. With two outs, Adam Jones bunted for a base hit. Nick Markakis singled to left, and with Jones tearing around second, Nix mishandled the ball for an error, allowing Jones to score. Markakis scored on Guerrero's RBI single.

"It was almost two different games for John," Washington manager Jim Riggleman said. "Fifteen pitches in the first two innings, then in the third inning he had a hard time stopping that rally."

The Orioles added four more in the seventh on Robert Andino's RBI double and run-scoring singles by Markakis, Wieters and Hardy.

The Orioles reinstated RHP Alfredo Simon from the restricted list. Simon, who has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the Dominican Republic, will work out of the bullpen. ... INF Cesar Izturis was transferred from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list. ... 2B Brian Roberts, on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion, has not resumed physical activity. Roberts said he still has headaches, and is unsure about when he might return. "It's not life and death, but when it comes to baseball right now, today it's not great," Roberts said. ... RHP Jason Berken who was sent to Norfolk by Baltimore on Friday, will start on Tuesday for the Tides, Showalter said. ... Willie Randolph coached third base for the Orioles. John Russell, normally the third base coach, had an injection in a knee. ... Washington 1B Adam LaRoche singled in the second inning to break an 0-for-26 skid.
