Bordeaux beat Evian to climb top of Ligue 1

Bordeaux replaced Lille at the top of the Ligue 1 standings after a 2-1 victory against Evian on Friday.

Les Girondins bounced back from last weekend's shock defeat at Guingamp, with Diego Rolan's first-half strike giving them a 1-0 lead at the Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas before Wahbi Khazri ensured the points with a fine strike in the second half.

Evian fought their way back into the match when Yeltsin Tejeda pulled a goal back four minutes from time but, despite their spirited performance, Pascal Dupraz's side could not find an equaliser in the closing stages.

After a docile start, Bordeaux nearly took the lead in the 16th minute when Rolan headed a surging Khazri free-kick inches over the crossbar.

They were ahead just three minutes later, however. Rolan evaded the Evian defenders and met Nicolas Maurice-Belay's probing cross at the near post to slot past goalkeeper Jesper Hansen to give Les Girondins a 1-0 lead.

Rolan's deft finish means he has scored four league goals this season. The Uruguay forward managed only one goal in the entire 2013-14 season - his first in French football.

Evian could have been on level terms in the 33rd minute when Nicolas Benezet volleyed Fabien Camus' far-post cross over the bar and Bordeaux went into the interval a goal to the good.

The second half was only 10 minutes old when the hosts doubled their advantage - and Khazri did it in fine style.

Jaroslav Plasil found Khazri on the edge of the Evian penalty area with a square ball from the left flank and the Tunisia attacking midfielder's right-foot shot curled into the top corner with Hansen a mere spectator.

Gianni Bruno perhaps could have done better in the 73rd minute when found himself in space in the penalty area but his shot lacked potency and home keeper Cedric Carrasso saved easily.

Evian, to their credit, kept plugging away and got their reward in the 86th minute when Tejeda finally breached Bordeaux's defence.

Kassim Abdallah's right-wing cross found Sougou in the penalty area, his flick-on reached Tejeda who drove home from close range.

Evian could not find a second before the final whistle, much to the delight of the majority of supporters present inside the Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas.

The victory for Willy Sagnol's side means they top the Ligue 1 table with 13 points from their first six matches, while winless Evian remain bottom with just one point from their six fixtures.
