The pace did not relent as the Bundesliga side equalised a second time, Xhaka putting everything into a scorching free-kick that cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and over the line.
Gladbach were inches from stealing all three points when Patrick Herrmann hit the post with nine minutes remaining, but both sides left with a point.
