Iceland cruise past 10-man Turkey as Omer Toprak is sent off

Iceland got their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign up and running in style with an emphatic 3-0 win at home to 10-man Turkey.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's first-half header set the hosts on their way and their task became easier when their opponents had Omer Toprak sent off for two yellow cards in five minutes soon after the break.

Two goals in three second-half minutes from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson sealed an impressive win for Iceland against one of their expected rivals for qualification from Group A.

Gokhan Gonul had an early chance for the visitors, firing over from inside the area, but Iceland soon established control.

Birkir Bjarnason shot wide of the right post following a cross from Ari Freyr Skulason before Bodvarsson thumped a header against the bar in the 14th minute.

The Viking forward only had to wait four more minutes for his goal, though, again getting his head to the ball and guiding it high into the net at the back post following a Sigurdsson corner from the left.

Things got even harder for the Turks when Toprak was sent off in the 59th minute.

Booked in the 55th minute for a foul on Bodvarsson, he received his marching orders for a handball just four minutes later.

And, down to 10 men, things went from bad to worse for the Turks.

Swansea's Sigurdsson fired home a low shot in the 76th minute and Sigthorsson rounded off the win with a third, also finishing well from inside the area.
