Hoyer to start over Manziel

Although neither quarterback has had a particularly stellar preseason, the Browns have decided on Brian Hoyer over Johnny Manziel to start in Week 1. Hoyer struggled in their Monday night game against the Redskins, but Manziel didn't do much better, and he sparked a controversy by gesturing with his middle finger toward the Redskins' bench. Manziel may be the team's QB of the future, but it remains to be seen just when that will come.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans manager Joe Mikulik has a history of demonstrative reactions to calls that he feels have been made in error. He has thrown bases, poured water on home plate and re-enacted the plays in question for the umpires' benefit. To the best of our knowledge, however, he had never incorporated leaving pieces of his uniform on the field into his routine -- at least, not until Sunday:

Bravo, Joe Mikulik. We don't know whether the umpire made the correct call or not. All we know is that we get you. We've all been there.

On his retirement tour, Derek Jeter has received plenty of tributes. Television commercials. Commemorative videos. Gifts such as subway tiles, a surfboard and a fine bottle of wine.

And now, a five-acre corn maze in New Jersey:

Jeter Corn Maze VonThun Farms

That, via computer rendering, comes from VonThun Farms in South Brunswick, about 55 miles south of Yankee Stadium, whose corn maze long has been a staple -- just not with The Captain's face.

Owner Cindy VonThun told the Associated Press the farm originally planned a maze that looked like a tractor carrying pumpkins. But Utah-based The Maize Company, which helps build the VonThun mazes, suggested Jeter instead.

"'You're in the middle of Jeter Country, why wouldn't you be doing a tribute to this man? He's wonderful,'" she said the company told VonThun. "Everyone's going to love that more than they're going to love a tractor pulling some wagons, pulling some pumpkins. We thought about it and thought why not.

"This was just something totally different. ... To walk out in the field and to be on a path and to say, 'I'm in Derek Jeter's chin,' it's pretty cool."

The maze, which has been completed, will be open from Sept. 20 through Halloween, according to VonThun.

Gentry Stein, 18, won the 2014 World Yo-Yo Contest in Prague just a few days ago, and judging from this video, he totally deserved it:

Seriously, this guy is better at yo-yoing than any of us have ever been at anything. We could barely even "walk the doggie" without almost seriously injuring ourselves.
