Luis Suarez scores but Costa Rica defeat Uruguay on penalties in friendly

Costa Rica defeated Uruguay on penalties after their friendly in Montevideo ended 3-3 after 90 minutes on Thursday.

Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani picked up goals for Uruguay, but it was the Ticos who prevailed 7-6 from the spot after Egidio Arevalo and Guzman Pereira failed to convert.

Costa Rica, fresh off a World Cup in which they surprised nearly everyone by reaching the quaterfinals, took an early lead against the run of play through Alvaro Saborio's header in the first half.

Suarez slotted home a Cristian Rodriguez cross five minutes after the break to equlise, but Bryan Ruiz again put Costa Rica in front a minute later with a shot from outside the box.

Uruguay's Jose Gimenez headed home from a free kick in the 64th minute to level the score a second time, and Cavani gave the hosts the lead three minutes later.

But the visitors struck back in the 90th minute through Johan Venegas, who slotted home a through ball from Saborio to force the game to be decided on penalties.

Suarez opened the shootout with a goal but Celso Borges then hit the bar with Costa Rica's first attempt.

Arevalo could have won the match with Uruguay's fifth shot, but World Cup hero Keylor Navas saved to extend the shootout.

Three rounds later, Pereira missed high and Cristian Gamboa slotted home to give Costa Rica the victory.
